Keyboard Issues in Windows 7 (Can't use "Enter" or "Numbers Pad" on Laptop)
As I'm using Windows 7 I run into two problems...1) Sometimes, I cannot hit the enter key without it creating a window, asking me to edit my power plan. I don't know what I did to create this problem, but it gets annoying. The only way to avoid this is to hold shift+enter for a soft return.2) When I click on the Num Lock pad to access my number keys and forget to turn it off, it also makes the keys on the board type numbers. For example, typing the word "jump" would show up as 140*. The only way to resolve this is by turning the num lock off. I tried resetting by pressing Fn+NumLock but no luck.have anyone figure out how to solve these problems?I have a HP 9310us with 2 GBs RAM if that helps.Currently using Windows 7 RTM.

1: OK, don't know what to say there.... You might try looking throught the power settings in Control Panel to see if you can stop this...Do you have any weird/unusual programs installed? Have you done a virus scan in a while? 2: This is not a win7 OS problem. The laptop hardware is designed to turn the alphanumeric keyboard keys marked with numbers or other symbols (aka J also has the number 1 on it) into a numpad when numlock is on. To disable that and get a real keyboard again, you have to turn numlock off. This will happen with any OS on that laptop, once again, this is not a OS issue.Hello! Number 1: Virus Scans everyday at noon, on the dot. No viruses. Define "unusual programs". If Launchy is an unusual program, then that's one. Number 2: My laptop keyboard is a full keyboard, complete with a number pad. I would be able to turn on the number pad on Vista and don't have to worry about the keyboard typing the numbers when I'm typing letters. Turning the NumKey on and off is kind of annoying way to solve this problem, especially when I didn't have to think about it when I was using Vista. If this doesn't happen on Vista, but it happening on Windows 7, but you're saying it's not an OS problem, then what is it?

The Vista install on your laptop must have had a special program from HP then that dealt with this, since you didn't have this problem with Vista, and this is a feature of the laptop's hardware... See if there are any downloads for your laptop on HP's site that may help with this. The links I have found that may help are: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=3370372&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=0&submit.x=0&lang=en&cc=us http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2093&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3370372 Let's see: Unusual programs: anything that tweaks advanced system settings, weird programs that do some cool but bizarre things... Since you have no clue what I was talking about, they you probably don't have any weird programs installed.Hello! What a strange predicament you have. I would have to associate this to windows 7's inability to work with your hardware. If this is the case the solution would be a keyboard update of some sort, probably from HP.

Reason why I say this is a hardware feature is that I have a Sony laptop with its from-the-factory XP install on it, and it does the exact same thing, except the keyboard does not have a separate numpad. I tried typing an i once (or maybe I tried typing in the run box "p-r-o-c-e-x-p", I forget which) and got a 5 out of one of the keys, and I figured out that turning numlock off restores the keyboard. I looked at the affected keys, and they have near the bottom of the key, a 0-9 number that will be what it types when numlock is on. Look through your keyboard and see if you can find a 0-9 or other symbols under the main lettering for the key. (aka you say J types a 1. On the "J" key, you will also find the number 1 on it.) I guess this feature is made so that you can cut the standard keypad and make a makeshift one in the alphanumeric keys in the keyboard.Hello! Joelbx, I'm notthat familiar with laptops which is why I should keep my big keyboard shut, but, are there any drivers associated with a built in keyboard that might cause this weirdness if they were not the right one?
August 23rd, 2009 5:25pm

I would think if they were the wrong drivers it would either: 1. Crash system royally. 2. Not be able to receive and pass on to the OS any input from the keyboard.Hello! I just came back from HP .com and saw there to be driver updates for the HP quick launch buttons on the keyboard. This computer comes pre-installed with vista, so it may be there are specific HP drivers or the like needed for this keyboard to work properly.
August 23rd, 2009 5:39pm

Yes, that is what the links I give earlier point to, HP's drivers page for that laptop. Now it is up to the OP to see if any of these drivers help fix the problem. (Please tell me if the links don't work!)Hello! Hard to say where to find it on the restore disc without actually seeing the files in the disc.Hello! From your experiance would extra drivers be stored inside install.wim or hopefully in a folder outside install.wim?

The drivers were the first thing I looked up. The "QuickKeys" are installed, but nothing works. It seems that the Fn key is totally disabled. I tried making screenshots today and was not able to do it. It seems that Windows installed a generic keyboard driver and HP main website don't have the Vista keyboard driver. So, I decided to join the HP Windows 7 Beta board and see what I can do to resolve this issue. So, thanks for trying to help.

I already checked the disks. In order for me to gain access, I have to restore everything back to factory settings. It's not worth doing at the moment. Funny... when I look into the Keyboard properties, it says: "plugged into keyboard port"
